Shoes off!

My tip of the day... take your shoes off at the door.
I know it's dull and perhaps a little unwelcoming to ask guests to remove their shoes at the door but consider this...

85% of the dirt on your soles rubs off in the first four steps you take into your home!

  1. Ugh!! I have been thinking the exact same thing this week as I have hoovered and hoovered and hoovered! My littlest one is crawling and consuming everything he finds on the floor which has prompted me to keep the carpet as clean as humanly possible - but actually it would just be better if we all made sure our shoes came off as soon as we got inside! Thank you for this reminder! xxx

    1. Hi Fiona, yes we first implemented the shoes off policy when my eldest was a living on the carpet.

  2. In Norway, it is common politeness to take off your shoes in the hallway in private homes. If you're planning to wear shoes (i.e. at a party), you bring them in a bag, and change when you get there. The reasons may be several, but the weather and hard floors may have something to do with it. Some people have a store of slippers for guests, perfect if the floors are cold during wintertime.

    1. Thank you for reminding me Grethe I was going to say you could buy or make guest slippers for visitors to slip on. The Norwegians are such a sophisticated and organised people. Heather Ross's book Weekend Sewing has instructions for making guest slippers using 2 fat quarters (available at quilting shops for around £2.50)that would be perfect for this. Alternatively a nice basket full of cosy socks would nice too.
